Background For this project we were required to create a board game based off specific chemical reactions. We included a single replacement reaction, a double displacement reaction, a production of a gas, the lighting of an LED, and a physical and chemical change of energy. We were required to have a sturdy board game, safety precautions, playing pieces, instructions/set up, a blueprint, and explanations of each reaction as well as equations.
Our Game For our board game theme we went with the theme of "ZEN" basing it off of all of our names(Zoe, Ely, and Nick). We created a simple but fun board game for all ages.
Set Up Get all materials needed -Chemicals -Volcano -Glass bowls -Playing Cards -Playing Pieces -Lemons -Metals -LED Put them in their designated area Place a game piece on each first stair for how many players are playing Place stack of cards into card dedicated area on board Start by Player 1 taking the first card on top Repeat until stack runs out then re shuffle
Playing Instructions Goal: The objective of the game is to reach the middle and head down the unique path to get to the finish. When a player reaches the middle they can choose between Reaction #1, #2, or #3. The person who gets to the finish wins and gets to do the last reaction #4. Playing Instructions Set up each playing piece at a “start” Take a card (start with player 1) Do what the card says Move onto next player After reaching the middle turn onto the shortest path, and choose a reaction The first to reach the end of the shortest path wins the game and gets to perform the last chemical reaction After using card put it to the side When all cards have been used, re shuffle and continue
Safety Precautions Don’t touch anything unless told Don’t touch your face if your hands have come in contact with any chemicals Use pipet fillers whenever pipetting any fluid Use plastic gloves when handling any hazardous materials to prevent skin contact. Label and date all chemical mixtures that are made up and kept for future use Dispose of all used solutions in an approved manner as directed by Ms.Vogl Return all chemicals you are using to their proper storage space. Be familiar with the use of the eye-wash, the laboratory shower Long hair and loose clothing must be confined Thoroughly wash your hands after leaving the laboratory Never direct the open end of test tube toward yourself or anyone else Explanations and Equations of Reactions Single Replacement Mg+CuCl2 ---> MgCl2 + Cu In our single replacement reaction the Magnesium replaces the Copper based on its position on the Activity Series, which tells us what metals can replace other metals in a single replacement reaction. The result is Magnesium Chloride and Copper from the original of Copper Chloride and Magnesium. Double Displacements Cu(NO3)2 +Na2CO3--->CuCO3+2NaNO3 Cu(NO3)2+(NH4)2SO4--->CuSO4+2NH4NO3 Pb(NO3)2+K2CrO4--->PbCrO4+2KNO3 In double displacement reaction there are 2 compounds with a cation and an anion. The two cations gain the other compound’s anion making 2 completely new and different compounds. Production of a gas : The rapid decomposition of the Hydrogen Peroxide by reacting with our catalyst, Potassium Iodide, releases a burst of oxygen. All the oxygen is trying to escape and it expands the former liquid into a foam like form. 2H2O2--->2H2O+O2 H2O2+KI---->H2O+KIO- KIO-+H2O2--->H2O+O2+KI-
Reflection This project was very fun as well as a great way for us to learn the fundamentals of chemical reactions. Ely, Nick, and I all worked very well together and had great communication. The two things we could have improved on was time management and splitting up the jobs more equally. I feel that we weren't motivated until we had to be which is when we did our best work but I'm sure we all would have been less stressed if we starting planning as soon as Ms. Vogl told us about the project. I feel that sometimes people were doing more work than others but it all seemed to even out at the end when peoples strengths while presenting showed through the Board Game Night. I learned a lot during the course of this project and believe that I learned a lot more because of this project
