The respiratory system is a vital part of the body that allows oxygen to get to different parts of the body. Having to make a model of the system, it is natural that we make the most important part of the system: inhalation and exhalation.
1st Design:
The first part of the system shows how lungs normally inhale and exhale with the respiratory system. We will make this part out of two straws, a bottle, two balloons, tape, and a piece of plastic bag.
3. Our model will do the function in the respiratory system of breathing through the lungs. This will work by pulling the bottom white balloon which then expands the green balloons. When we stop pulling on the white balloon and release it the green balloons will retract just like lungs. 4. 3 balloons 2 the same color and 1 a different color. A 2 liter soda bottle. 2 straws and 3 rubber bands 5. We will first get the 2 liter soda bottle and cut it in half. We will then cut a balloon in half and stretch it across the bottom of the soda bottle. After this we will put 2 balloons on 2 straws using rubber bands and put the two straws together using a rubber band. We will pull the straws out of the top of the bottle and make holes in the cap for these straws to go through. 6. This model represents and portrays the biology and function of a vital part of the human body, therefore this model goes into the biology category well. It also is much like STEM of last year, where we created models and projects, making it also part of physics and engineering.
2nd Design:
-Carbon dioxide getting taken out of the red blood cells
We would have a long tube going vertically in the air, the tube would be cut in half and at the half point there would be a funnel with filter paper. And the rest of the tube would continue downward with a cup at the bottom. Red water would start at the top and represent red blood cells and then there would be tiny rocks in the red water which would represent the carbon dioxide. As it went down the tube and arrived at the filter which would act as the bronchiole and alveoli the tiny rocks would be filter out(representing the carbon dioxide being taken out of the red blood cells. Then the red water would continue down the tube.
3. This model will perform the act of taking the carbon dioxide out of red blood cells in the respiratory system. 4. Materials -plastic tube -water -red dye -tiny rocks -filter paper -a cup/ funnel
